Biography

Caterina lo Jacono is born in Vicari on 26 September 1851, the daughter of Vincenzo lo Jacono and Filippa Moscato.[1]

Caterina's family moves to Corleone by around 1857, when her brother, Antonino, is born there.

Caterina marries at least twice, first to Giuseppe Ajosa, son of the late Giuseppe Ajosa and the living Arcangela Palumbo, on 4 October 1869. Her father has died by this time.[2]

She remarries to Serafino Saltaformaggio, son of Antonino Saltaformaggio and Teresa Terrusa, on 22 February 1873 in Corleone.[3]

Caterina and Serafino have at least eight children: Antonino (1873), Charles (1878), Bernard (c. 1880), Teresa (1882), Vincenzo (c. 1883), Filippa (1886), Mariannina/Mary (1888), and Cairo (c. 1895). According to the 1900 census, Caterina, a widow, has had eleven children in total, of whom seven are living at the time of the census.

Antonino is born 26 November 1873 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Domenico Moscato and Francesca Paola, his unmarried sister.[4]

The family emigrates when Antonino is two years old, around 1875-6, according to reporting at his death.[5] In answer to a question on the 1900 census, Caterina says she immigrated in 1875.[6]

Charles is born 5 April 1878 in Louisiana.[6]

Bernard is probably born on 18 July 1880 in Louisiana. In the 1900 census, he is reportedly 19 years old and born 18 July 1890, which would make him a month shy of his tenth birthday.[6]

Teresa is born 9 July 1882 in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.[7][8]

Vincenzo is born around 1883 in New Orleans.[9]

Filippa is born around 1887 in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, according to the record of her marriage. According to the 1900 census, she was born born 1 September 1886.[6]

The dates of Vincenzo and Cairo's births in New Orleans are not known. I estimate they are at least 20 at marriage.

Mariannina is born around 1894, based on her age at marriage. If she is the same person as "Mary," in the 1900 census, she is born six years earlier, on 11 February 1888 in Louisiana.[6]

Antonio marries Lucia Terranova on 3 February 1894 in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Pointe a la Hache, Louisiana.[10]

Serafino dies 27 May 1899 in Creedmore Plantation, in Poydras, Louisiana.

In the 1900 census of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, taken 7 June, Catherine Saltaformaggio, 44, heads a household. She was born 26 October 1855 in Italy and is a widow. She has had 11 children, 7 still living. At home with her are Charles, 22, born 5 April 1878; Bernard, 19, born 18 July 1890 (10 years difference between reported age and DOB); Teresina, 16, born 9 July 1883 (she is 17, born in 1882); “Philas,” a daughter, 13, born 1 September 1886; and Mary, 12, born 11 February 1888; all born in Louisiana. Catherine immigrated in 1875 and is a naturalized citizen. Charles is a farm manager and Bernard is a farm laborer.[11] Note that there is no five or six year old daughter named Mariannina, nor do the sons Vincenzo and Cairo appear in this census.

Teresina, age 18 (b. 1883), marries Santo "Joseph" Calamia, age 25 (b. 1876), on 30 January 1901 in Orleans, LA.[12]

Antonio is killed in April 1903. At the time of his death, he is living in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, with his wife and young son, and his mother, three sisters, and a brother are living in New Orleans.[5]

Filippa, age 17 (b. 1887), native of Plaquemines Parish, LA, marries Vincenzo Bonanno, age 26 (b. 1878), on 4 June 1904 in Orleans, LA. [13]

Vincenzo, native of New Orleans, marries Susanna Bartolotta on 6 February 1910.[14]

Cairo marries Anna Lacey on 19 February 1915 in Orleans, LA.[15]

Caterina's brothers, Antonino and Calogero, are named among known gabellotti and members of the Corleonesi Mafia in 1916.[16]

Mariannina, age 31 (b. 1894), marries Luke Loverde on 28 December 1925 in Orleans, LA.[17]

Teresa dies on 13 June 1963 in NOLA at age 79-80. She is buried in Metairie Cemetery in NOLA.[7]
